A Quick Look: THE BLOB (1958 - color)

It's cliche to say it, but it really is true: THE BLOB is the quintessential 50's monster movie, right alongside EARTH VS. THE SPIDER. The plot is simplicity itself: two teenagers are aware that a horrible menace is at large and nobody will believe them. The film was a smash hit, re-issued multiple times, and spawned an inferior sequel in the 70's, as well an obligatory remake in the 80's. For decades, TV producers have been trying to talk Jack Harris into creating a Blob teleseries! How on earth that could work as a continuing series, I have no clue. Oh, and of course it was Steve McQueen's first big starring role. Offered a percentage of the returns, Steve figured the movie would get lost in the shuffle of B monster movies and took scale. He was to return for the same outfit's follow-up films, THE 4D MAN and DINOSAURUS!, but his star rose so quickly that he only made the one monster picture. An essential picture it is, too. See it if you haven't already.
