Although
Lovecraft had been popular in literary circles, it wasn't until the mid
60's that an official adaptation of his work made it to the screen. How
close the results were to the author's work I can't say, but it was a
considerable amount of time until another film referenced Lovecraft.
DIE, MONSTER, DIE! was combination science fiction and horror, as a
scientist uses meteorite fragments to cultivate
a menagerie of horrors. Boris Karloff plays the scientist, challenged
by Nick Adams as the hero. I'm not sure what impact the film had at the
boxoffice, thought I believe it was paired with the popular PLANET OF
THE VAMPIRES. Though a few Lovecraft themes would be explored
cinematically, the author's name wouldn't be used as a selling point
until RE-ANIMATOR in the 1980's.
