A Quick Look: THE MAN WITHOUT A BODY (1959)

THE MAN WITHOUT A BODY was a sort of reverse-DONOVAN'S BRAIN. A tycoon wants to keep his empire thriving beyond his own earthly existence and thinks he has a way of doing so thanks to a recent experiment by a team of scientists who've managed to keep the head of a monkey alive in their lab. The tycoon approaches the scientists and offers to fund their work if they'll do a side project for him -which is to revive a human head. What the scientists aren't aware of is that it won't be just any head, but the head of Nostradamus! The thinking is that Mickey's predictions will ensure the long-term stability of the tycoon's business interests. Unfortunately for him, Mickey isn't too thrilled about being brought back to life -and confined to a table to boot- and he feeds him erroneous information! The rather fantastic premise, and the fact that Mickey's head hasn't decayed in the slightest in the centuries he's been buried, may sound really out there, but I actually remember the film as being fairly moody and intriguing. Though I only saw it once as a child, I still recall many of the visuals. Stars Robert Hutton, and I'm looking forward to seeing the film again as an adult. I'm not sure if it's been issued on disk, or even on video, though.
